Education is a vital part of the work of Gainsborough's House.  Programmes linked to the National Curriculum are designed for the collection, the temporary exhibitions and the Print Workshop.  Schools can become Friends and gain free admission.

The Collection

The resources of the collection enable pupils to get to know all aspects of the eighteenth-century painter's work.  The collection also provides an insight into the social history of the 1700s.  Authentically reconstructed costumes of Gainsborough's early portrait of the girl and boy (about 1744) are a useful introduction for younger children.  Worksheets are available for £1.20 (inc.p&p) and two publications help teachers to use the collection at Gainsborough's House and back in the class room.  Click here for information about these publications.

Temporary Exhibitions

Various activities are arranged in conjunction with the temporary exhibition programme.  Details are provided in a free booklet Education at Gainsborough's House which can be sent on request.

Print Workshop

This resource can be used by school children by arrangement.  Many school teachers find that the Summer Courses are a useful way to become conversant with different printing techniques.
