NOEL
MYLES
Plants without Flowers
Noel Myles exquisite hand-made platinum and silver photographic prints show
us the enduring value of traditional wet-process fine art photography. (More
details..)
The exhibition should appeal to a wide range of students; particularly
those interested in photography and, perversely as it may seem, drawing.
3 July to 31 October
LETTERS
IN THE GARDEN
Lettercutting in stone is the theme of this exhibition and
will be found on a variety of interesting objects in the garden during the
summer months, including sundials, birdbaths and commemorative plaques. (More
details...)
Following last year's initiative by a local primary school, this year we
are inviting any school in the area to bring a picnic lunch and have a close
look at the way letters can be carved in stone, and the various styles in
forming familiar letters that each artist uses to say different things.
As it is close to the end of term we feel that the emphasis could well be on
the picnic rather than the 'letters' and we leave it to the school concerned to
divide up their time in the way that seems most appropriate!

RELIEF
PRINTING TODAY
This is the first in a series of thematic shows reflecting the strong links
with printmaking at Gainsborough's House. This exhibition looks at the
innovative and expressive use of wood and lino by contemporary artists. (More
details...)
The exhibition will be interesting for all students involved in
printmaking and an enlightening experience for those who have not yet realised
the potential of this medium.
There will be a printmaking event for schools arranged in the Print Workshop
during the course of the exhibition.
3 July to 29 August
THREE
PAINTERS
Christopher Northall, Andres Vass, Hugh Webster
This exhibition of paintings and drawings explores the similarities and
differences of approach to landscape of three contemporary Suffolk painters. (More
details...)
Upstairs in the Weaving Room there will be an exhibition of materials and
sources of the artists' work giving an interesting insight into what goes into
the making of a finished work of art.
For this year's contribution to Gallery Week (17 to 25 July) the artists
involved in this exhibition will be drawing and painting in the Weaving Room
giving further understanding into their ways and methods of working.
15 May to 27 June
KATE MALONE
The Allotment
Kate Malone's decorative, witty and colourful work is enjoyed by all ages
and is also highly influential in the field of contemporary British ceramics.
The exhibition theme is the fruit and vegetables to be found in The Allotment -
from prize pieces such as a pumpkin teapot to rows of individual pea-pods. The
exuberant forms in richly coloured glazes are particularly likely to appeal to
the imagination of children and students.
Alexandra Drysdale, an artist who exhibited her work at Gainsborough's
House so successfully a couple of years ago, returns to run three stimulating
coloured-drawing workshops for Middle Schools using the inspirational material
provided in Kate Malone's ceramics.
Kate Malone will be giving a talk about her work as part of the Thursday
evening series.
This will be on 3 June at 7.30pm.
15 May to 27 June
COLIN
WILKIN
Views of Essex
Colin Wilkin is a young painter who sees strong pattern and simple forms in
the landscape of North Essex. He produces sensitive finely delineated
watercolours which focus on the geometry and repeated patterns of field and
copse. Interesting echoes of Eric Ravillious, who painted in the same area in
the 1930's, can be found in his work.
Gainsborough's House has a long tradition of showing landscape painting
including masterpieces by Thomas Gainsborough himself.
This year we have Colin Wilkin's contemporary work which has many references
to early twentieth century work. Colin's exhibition is followed by Three
Painters showing more landscape paintings.
All these exhibitions provide pupils and students with the invaluable
opportunity to compare and contrast landscape painting across the board.
20 March to 9 May
SUFFOLK ART SOCIETY:
BIENNIAL MEMBER'S EXHIBITION
This thriving art society has had a long association with Gainsborough's
House. Exhibitors are drawn from South Suffolk and neighbouring parts of Essex.
A wide variety of work is on display.
20 March to 9 May
GAINSBOROUGH DRAWINGS
FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION
This remarkable collection includes work from throughout
Thomas Gainsborough's career - from early pencil sketches of corners of Suffolk
to the elaborate set-pieces of his mature years.
We welcome artist Peter Partington back to Gainsborough's House to talk
to Year 10 and 11 students about the methods and materials that Gainsborough
used in his drawings, and then to run what we are sure will be a very lively
workshop putting some of these ideas into practice.
30 January to 14 March
FROM PROTOTYPE TO
PRODUCTION
New Furniture from the Crafts Council Collection
This exhibition features the work of seven young designers, and follows the
progression of their ideas from the drawing board through to the final product.
It illustrates all stages of the process including finished products, in
materials ranging from plywood to recycled plastic.
The exhibition should give students interested in design a rare
opportunity to see how professionals work in industry, and simultaneously look
at some inspiring contemporary furniture.
30 January to 14 March
CLAIRE ROBERTS
Recent Prints
Claire Roberts is a young printmaker who is rapidly making a name for
herself. Her images are striking and complex, some taking early medical
illustrations as their starting point. She combines a wide range of techniques
to great effect.
Andrew Hunter, Assistant Curator as Gainsborough's House and organiser of
the exhibition will be holding a seminar on Claire's work. This will take the
form of a round-the-table discussion. Students will need to see the exhibition
beforehand and have questions to bring up at the event.
