In Conversation with…Maggi Hambling

To celebrate the generous gift of a large collection of works by Cedric Morris, we are delighted to welcome Maggi
Hambling in conversation with Mark Bills, Director of Gainsborough’s House. Maggi will be sharing her memories of
Cedric Morris, of life at Benton End, Hadleigh, and talking about works currently on show in our exhibition.
Lett-Haines and Morris founded the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing in 1937 at Dedham, Suffolk and
then from 1940 at Benton End, Hadleigh. Well-known students included Maggi Hambling and Lucian Freud, both of
whom felt they profited greatly from the teaching. Although Morris is perhaps best known for his flower paintings, his
portraits, landscapes and still lifes are equally stunning.
