Gainsborough’s House at ArtUK

December 11, 2019Gainsborough's HouseGainsborough's House

Why not take the opportunity to purchase a framed print of a painting from our collection at ArtUK. With over 40 works to chose from and a variety of frames available, it makes the perfect gift. Or why not chose the book ‘Early Gainsborough: From the obscurity of a Country Town’ by Gainsborough’s House Director Mark Bills.

Art UK is the online home for every public art collection in the UK. They are a charity, and their website represents a collaboration between over 3,200 British institutions.

Their aim:

…to make art available for everyone – for enjoyment, learning and research.

About Gainsborough’s House

Thomas Gainsborough (1727-88) was born in Sudbury and baptised at the Independent Meeting-House in Friars Street on 14 May 1727, the fifth son and ninth child of John and Mary Gainsborough. In 1958, Gainsborough’s House Society was formed to purchase the house and establish it as a centre for Thomas Gainsborough. The Museum opened to the public in 1961 and has remained open for over 50 years. The beautiful historic garden at the heart of Gainsborough’s House is maintained by a devoted body of volunteers, who garden exclusively with plants that were available in Gainsborough’s lifetime.
